It is with tremendous sadness that I must share with you news of the death of at-large director and former NRLC president Mildred F. Jefferson, M.D. It is believed that Dr. Jefferson had become ill very recently.
As you may know, Mildred was the first black woman to graduate from Harvard Medical School. The recipient of many accolades and honors, it was the right-to-life movement that, for nearly four decades, benefited from Mildred's fiery passion, eloquence, and compassion. She served many years on the National Right to Life board of directors both as director from Massachusetts and as an at-large director. She was elected to three-terms as NRLC president from 1975-1978. Prior to that, Mildred was elected vice-chairman of the board (June 1973) and chairman of the board (June 1974). Mildred was a charismatic speaker well-known for her inspirational words in defense of life - be they spoken at a convention, rally or even inside a NRLC board meeting. Her death creates a void at such events and her smile and wit will be greatly missed.
We were honored to call her our colleague; we were blessed to call her our friend. I know you join me in expressing our sincerest condolences to the board and staff of Massachusetts Citizens for Life over the loss of their dear friend and mentor. Please continue to keep them in your prayers.
Geline B. Williams
Chairman of the Board
National Right to Life Committee
