Theresa Hanley RIP

Theresa Hanley, former MCFL President (1991-92), passed away on February 22nd. She was instrumental in getting pro-life Governor Ed King elected in 1978 and her husband, Ed, served in Gov. King's Cabinet as Secretary of Administration and Finance.

Theresa was one of the leaders working for the 1986 ballot referendum which was narrowly defeated and would have abolished public funding of abortion in Massachusetts.

Perhaps her most lasting pro-life legacy, though, is that it was Theresa who began The Respect Life Walk to Aid Mothers and Children back in 1987. The thousands of dollars raised by the walkers over all these years has helped dozens of pregnancy care centers and other support groups to continue their life-saving work.

I first got involved with MCFL in 1986 with the ballot referendum and began serving on the MCFL Board of Directors when Theresa was President. I will always remember her leadership and grace. May she rest in peace.

Press release critical of “Buffer Zone” decision

February 23, 2012, Boston: Massachusetts Citizens for Life today criticized the opinion upholding the so-called "Buffer Zone" law rendered by a federal judge.

According to MCFL President, Anne Fox, "Unfortunately, it has become common in this country for laws to apply differently when they have to do with abortion. The idea that people cannot express their views within a 35 foot radius - ie a circle with a 70 foot diameter - of an abortion facility is un-American. It is also ludicrous. Given the huge size of the zone, people have been approached by the police for engaging in activities on their own properties, which happen to be next door to abortion facilities. This happened recently in Worcester.

Courts have struck down less onerous laws in other states because they infringe on the First Amendment rights of U. S. citizens. We feel certain that higher courts will strike down the Massachusetts 'Buffer Zone'"

Were they wearing brown shirts?

It is getting vicious out there. "It's time for Senator Brown to admit to a Mistake"

http://boston.com/community/blogs/on_liberty/2012/02/its_time_for_senator_scott_bro.html

Here is very good explanation of the Blunt Amendment by National Right to Life, http://www.capwiz.com/nrlc/callalert/index.tt?alertid=61025131&type=CO

NRLC urges you to call your Senators to ask them to support the Amendment. We have not been calling Sen. Brown because he co-sponsored the Amendment as soon as Sen. Blunt filed it. Even as a State Rep and Senator, Brown had filed conscience legislation.

We are getting calls from the media that have two themes: (1)how could Brown be so stupid to back something no one likes and (2)he is doing this for political gain. The press doesn't see the inconsistency.

They also don't remember Martha Coakley's "Shannon O'Brien moment". O'Brien lost the governor's race to Mitt Romney when she announced hours before the election that 16 year old girls should be allowed to obtain abortions without their parents knowing.

Coakley repeated the mistake when she opined that Catholics should not be allowed to work in emergency rooms. Which brings us back to religious freedom.

So 50 people were at Sen. Brown's office abusing him for supporting our right of conscience.

Please call Sen. Brown's office right now to thank him profusely for co-sponsoring the Blunt Amendment. 202-224-4543

Doctor Prescribed Suicide – important hearings in two weeks

The Hemlock Society, now known as "Compassion and Choices" collected the required signatures to place their initiative petition on the ballot next November. As part of the process, the question, H 3884, will have a hearing:

Judiciary Committee

MA State House

Room A2

Tuesday, March 6 at 1:00PM

The hearing gives us a chance to organize, prepare our arguments for testimony, convince some legislators, and hear what the proponents think are their best arguments.

Please plan to attend the hearing and to testify if you can. Bring a written copy of your testimony. If you cannot attend, please submit your testimony by email to House Chair Eugene O'Flaherty, Gene.O'Flaherty@mahouse.gov

These websites are very helpful in preparing testimony: http://stopassistedsuicide-ma.com/, http://doctorsagainstsuicide.com/, http://www.patientsrightscouncil.org/site/.

We also have for loan at the MCFL office Wesley Smith's book on pain control and many copies of Brian Johnston's Death As A Salesman, both of which are worth checking.

Student Lobby Day Huge Success! Thanks to Reps. Harrington and Beaton

They say the performance of the stock market in January predicts the rest of the year. If attendance at Student Lobby Day predicts how our pro-life work will go for 2012, things will be very good! The youngsters kept coming and coming and coming - from as far as the First Congressional District to as close as Brighton. Attendance was four to five times that of last year, which was our first year. We could not have dealt with a bigger crowd and given them the tour and visits. We are considering offering field trips during school next year as well.

We are most grateful to Reps. Sheila Harrington, Groton, and Matthew Beaton, Shrewsbury, who each spent a great deal of time with the youngsters and shared with them the pro-life way they look at legislation and procedures. Also, Eva Murphy did an excellent job coordinating and making it all run smoothly. And I enjoy very much touring our beautiful State House with the youngsters. A good day was had by all and we look forward to expanding next year. I'll let you know when pictures are posted in the MCFL website. Anne

Feb. 22nd brings Ash Wednesday and 40 DAYS FOR LIFE

Our people who have participated in 40 DAYS will tell you how effective it is.  In case you have a chance to be involved, here is the information.  Sign-up is really easy and participation is really gratifying.  Bless you for all your efforts. Anne

40 Days for Life is a national, ecumenical pro-life effort that consists of 40 days of prayer and fasting for an end to abortion and peaceful vigil outside abortion facilities. The campaign is run twice a year-once during Lent, and once in the fall-in hundreds of cities across the country.  The upcoming spring campaign will run from February 22 to April 1, 2012 in five Massachusetts communities: Attleboro, Haverhill, Lynn, Springfield and Worcester. Participation in the campaign can take many forms: praying at one of the public vigils, remembering the campaign in your daily prayers, fasting in support of the campaign, etc. But, of course, the most visible is the public vigil.

Your blow for conscience rights

Since votes in 2002, Sen. Brown has put conscience at the top of his list, according to the today's Globe. You will see, from this video and his open letter, that he continues in the U. S. Senate.

There will be nasty columns in the Globe and the Herald. They are going to be trashing him unmercifully for sticking up for us and our rights! Please get on the blogs under the articles and fight back. He deserves our support! Good blogging, Anne

http://www.google.com/cse?cx=013272677517335896521%3Acnzhouqroxy&ie=UTF-8&sa=&q=98%25+catholic+women+abort

Dear Friends,

One of our most fundamental rights as a people is the freedom of religion. It was right here in Plymouth, Massachusetts that pilgrims from Europe established a colony because of religious persecution at home.

Now, it is Harvard Professor Elizabeth Warren who has assumed the mantle of oppressor. She and her allies on the left are dictating to Catholics and other people of faith that they must do as they are told when it comes to health care or face the consequences, regardless of their personal religious beliefs.

That's not the America our Founding Fathers envisioned, and it's just one of the unhealthy side effects of Obamacare, which seeks to impose a one-size-fits-all, government-knows-best health care program on the whole country.

Obamacare is bad law and needs to be repealed. Until that day arrives, it's important we fight to protect the public from some of its worst aspects.

I support a conscience exemption in health care for Catholics and other people of faith.  That's why I signed on to Senator Roy Blunt's bill to restore the conscience protections in the law that existed prior to the passage of Obamacare.

Professor Warren is opposed to providing a conscience exemption. Her view is that government can mandate religious people and organizations to act in ways that are contrary to their most deeply-held principles.  This type of thinking strikes at the very heart of the religious freedoms enshrined in our Constitution.

My last opponent, Martha Coakley, took the same position and said Catholics who work in emergency rooms should find a new line of work. This attitude is highly offensive to all Americans, not just people of faith.

Religious liberty is at the core of our nation's founding, and we in Massachusetts know that better than anyone. It is has helped make us a strong and diverse nation. We must continue to cherish it and fight back against those who would chip away at it.

Sincerely,

Scott Brown

There will be a presentation about the DPS,  how to form  professional groups to fight the ballot question, and we hope, the formation of groups of pharmacists and nurses.

Please invite all the pharmacists and nurses you know.

RSVP: Press "reply" or call 617-242-4199 X230 . Please let us know even if you can't come so that we can keep you informed. I'm looking forward to seeing you on Saturday. Anne

Are you a nurse? Open immediately, please.

All the polls (and common sense) show that nurses are viewed by the general public as the most creditable people when it comes to doctor prescribed suicide. Yes, doctors are next.

The Mass Medical Society voted 3-1 against doctor prescribed suicide. The doctors who worked on that effort have formed "Doctors Against Suicide" to fight the ballot question.

I know there are many, many wonderful nurses out there who are just as concerned. Testimony on DPS is coming up at the State House. I am hoping that will be a good vehicle for nurses to organize.

We had planned to meet early in March but have moved it up because testimony is March 6th. So...

O-compromise on conscience? Sure!

The president and the press are trying to confuse us. I found the following pieces very helpful.

"This so-called 'accommodation' changes nothing of moral substance and fails to remove the assault on religious liberty and the rights of conscience which gave rise to the controversy. It is certainly no compromise. The reason for the original bipartisan uproar was the administration's insistence that religious employers, be they institutions or individuals, provide insurance that covered services they regard as gravely immoral and unjust. Under the new rule, the government still coerces religious institutions and individuals to purchase insurance policies that include the very same services." Open Letter from Harvard Law Professor Mary Ann Glendon, who will speak at the 2012 fall MCFL Banquet; Princeton Professor Robert George, who will speak at the 2012 MCFL Mothers' Day Dinner; CUA President John Garvey, who hosted and addressed the MCFL Conventions for many years; Notre Dame Law Professor Carter Snead; and Yuval Levin of the Ethics & Public Policy Center

Press release from Douglas Johnson, Legislative Director, National Right to Life:

"President Obama today promulgated a scam that, if he is re-elected, will allow him to mandate that every health plan in America cover abortion on demand," said NRLC Legislative Director Douglas Johnson. "The same twisted logic will be applied: By ordering health plans to cover elective abortion, health plans would save the much higher costs of prenatal care, childbirth, and care for the baby -- and under the Obama scam, if a procedure saves money, then that means that you're not really paying for it when the government mandates it."

By this form of doublespeak, one could say that the federal Medicaid program was not really "funding abortion" when it paid for 300,000 abortions a year (prior to adoption of the Hyde Amendment in 1976), because after all, every abortion that the government paid for also saved the government money.

The Obama "you must pay, but nobody pays" scam might also be applied to other "cost-cutting" mandates. Perhaps every health plan will be mandated to cover physician-assisted suicide, in states in which assisted suicide is legal. After all, each suicide would result in a net savings to the plan, and under the Obama scam, that means it is really free and nobody really pays for it.

Some journalists have wrongly reported that the ObamaCare law contains language prohibiting the federal government from mandating that health plans cover abortions. This is erroneous. The law prevents the Secretary of Health and Human Services from including abortion in a list of federally mandated "essential health benefits." But the birth control mandate is based on an entirely different provision of the law, which allows the Secretary to mandate that all health plans cover any service that the Secretary places on a list of "preventive" services. There is nothing in the law to prevent the Secretary from placing abortion, assisted suicide, or any other additional services on the preventive services list, nor does the Secretary require the agreement of any other authority in the government to do so -- except, perhaps, the president.

At his press conference today, President Obama suggested that the birth-control mandate was recommended by "the nation's leading medical experts." The actual make up of the handpicked panel that made the birth control recommendations was reported by Kathryn Jean Lopez of National Review Online here.

NRLC supports enactment of the Respect for Rights of Conscience Act (S. 1467, H.R. 1179), which would allow health providers to decline to provide abortions or other specific medical services on the basis of religious belief or moral convictions.

All along you and I have objected to O-care because of abortion funding, rationing, denial of care, and slashing of conscience rights. Most individuals and groups stuck to the abortion funding but the package seemed so obvious to us.

What I want to know is: what does this say about Obama that he would do this now when it will probably ruin him?

You can be so proud of all the work you have done - and are doing to fight O-care.  Anne

Sen. Scott Brown Calls For Protection Of Religious Liberty

For Immediate Release                                                      CONTACT: John Donnelly

Brown Calls For Protection Of Religious Liberty

Washington, DC - U.S. Senator Scott Brown (R-MA) issued the following statement on the Department of Health and Human Services mandate under the 2010 health care law that religious organizations either participate in health care plans that violate their religious beliefs or face punitive fines:

"One of our most cherished liberties is freedom of religion. Like Ted Kennedy before me, I support a conscience exemption for religious organizations in health care. No one should be forced by government to violate the teachings of their faith. I encourage President Obama to re-examine his health care law and make sure no one is being forced to do something that is contrary to their religious beliefs."

Georgia’s law on assisted suicide. What does over turn mean?

The Georgia legislature reacted to the atrocious activities of Jack Kavorkian by passing a law that made it a crime to publicly state that you would help someone commit suicide. They would have been wiser to have outlawed "assisting" someone to kill themselves, as thirty-nine other states have done.  http://www.nationalreview.com/corner/290272/georgia-supreme-court-overturns-assisted-suicide-law-wesley-j-smith

Does this ruling impact on the doctor prescribed suicide bill, H3884 and ballot question here in Massachusetts? Not legally. There could still be a problem, however. If the proponents are able to frame the question as though the Georgia law actually outlawed doctor prescribed suicide they could then claim that the current situation in Massachusetts, where doctor prescribed suicide is against common law, is unconstitutional and must be corrected. Note that suicide and attempted suicide are not illegal in the Commonwealth.

It is up to us to stress that we are not trying to change Massachusetts law, just to keep the state from approving, and thereby encouraging, doctors to prescribe lethal drugs.

I am very proud of your level of commitment to spreading the word about DPS. I hear back and know that you are really getting people to talk about it. Please keep up your good work. Anne

NB, if you are a doctor, please visit www.doctorsagainstsuicide.comwww.doctorsagainstsuicide.com. Drs. John Howland, Mark Rollo, and many others are doing a stellar job of identifying doctors across the state who are opposed to DPS. I know you will want to work with them.< /p>

If you are a lawyer, you are invited to the MCFL office at the Schrafft Center in Charlestown at 6:00pm on Thursday, February 9th for a special evening. Jennifer Popik, JD, from the Robert Powell Center for Medical Ethics in DC, is coming to address legal aspects of the proposed law in Massachusetts. Jennifer and the Center have been involved in all the other states where DPS has come up. She will go into many interesting aspects of the proposal. I hope this will help prepare you to speak out and write Letters to the Editor. Please reply to this email or call 617-242-4199, X 230 to let us know you are coming because we will provide a light supper.

If you are a nurse, please pencil in Saturday morning, March 3rd if you live in Eastern Mass and March 17th if you live in Western Mass.

If you are a pharmacist, please let us know. We are in contact with a few wonderful pharmacists and need to know who else is out there. There is no protection to keep you from being required to fill those deadly prescriptions!

Please pass this along to all doctors, lawyers, nurses, and pharmacists whom you know. Thanks! A.

DPS HEARING DATE and meeting correction

We just learned that the Judiciary Committee will hear the Bill, which is the same as the ballot question on doctor prescribed suicide, H3884, on March 6th at 1:00pm. Please mark your calendar and plan to attend. We will need a major presence. The legislature could pass H3884 and it would be all over.

I listed the wrong date for the lawyer's meeting with Jennifer Popik. The actual date is Thur, Feb 16th at 6:00pm at the MCFL office.

We are changing the date for the nurses' meeting so that you nurses will have more time to reach out before the hearings. There will be another nurses' meeting in the western part of the state later.

Also, because the hearings are close, we invite all pharmacists to attend the nurses' meeting. The process for developing Nurses Against Doctor Prescribed Suicide and the information members need will be the same for the Pharmacists.

All the correct information is now listed below. The actual fight is beginning. We are ready. We need to get moving.

If you are a doctor, please visit www.doctorsagainstsuicide.comwww.doctorsagainstsuicide.com. Drs. John Howland, Mark Rollo, and many others are doing a stellar job of identifying doctors in the state who are opposed to DPS. I know you will want to work with them.

If you are a lawyer or law student, you are invited to the MCFL office at the Schrafft Center in Charlestown at 6:00pm on Thursday, February 16th for a special evening. Jennifer Popik, JD, from the Robert Powell Center for Medical Ethics in DC, is coming to give a legal analysis of the proposed law in Massachusetts.

If you are a nurse or a pharmacist or a student in either area, you are invited to the MCFL office at the Schrafft Center in Charlestown from 9:30am to 11:30 am on Saturday, February 18th. We will talk about the petition, it implications for you and what you can do as an individual and as part of a nurses' or pharmacists' group. Please note that retired professionals are every bit as necessary as those still in the field.

There is no protection to keep pharmacists from being required to fill those deadly prescriptions!

Please pass this along to all doctors, lawyers, nurses, and pharmacists whom you know and anyone else who might want to testify. Thanks! Anne

Komen, (much) more to the story

Austin Ruse, President of Catholic Family and Human Rights Institute has been following the situation closely. He tells Life News that today's statement by Komen does not change the policy they announced earlier this week.

 http://www.lifenews.com/2012/02/03/komen-may-continue-to-fund-some-planned-parenthood-grants/
and

http://www.lifenews.com/2012/02/03/komen-board-member-havent-caved-on-planned-parenthood-funding/

Carol Tobias, President of National Right to Life Committee, calls on Komen not to fund Planned Parenthood and other abortion providers in the future. Her press release seems to recognize the realities presented by Ruse and lays out a fruitful strategy for us to use.

Thanks to all the people who are digging clarity out of the press coverage and have sent along the information! Anne

NATIONAL RIGHT TO LIFE RESPONDS TO

KOMEN DECISION REGARDING PLANNED PARENTHOOD

WASHINGTON - Succumbing to pressure from the mainstream media and Planned Parenthood, Susan G. Komen for the Cure today announced Planned Parenthood Federation of America and its affiliates will remain eligible for grant funding. Planned Parenthood is the nation's largest abortion provider, performing approximately 27% of all abortions annually in the United States.

The following statement may be attributed to National Right to Life President Carol Tobias:

Shortly after news broke earlier this week that Komen was withdrawing future grant funding to Planned Parenthood and its affiliates, the abortion giant and its allies began a shrill online campaign to bring Komen to its knees by bullying the organization into submission.

Any decision to provide future grants approved for Planned Parenthood, which boasts a $1.1 billion budget, would be extremely and sadly misguided. Any grants to Planned Parenthood would be detrimental to women and their unborn children. Even in their own press statements, Planned Parenthood states that they refer for mammograms, an indication they don't perform them.

Planned Parenthood is not in the business of fighting breast cancer, they're in the business of performing abortions to the tune of more than 300,000 a year, which accounts for at least one-third of Planned Parenthood's nongovernmental clinic income. In fact, Planned Parenthood has announced that all of their affiliates will be required to perform abortions.

National Right to Life strongly urges Susan G. Komen for the Cure and all cancer research organizations to approve no future funding to Planned Parenthood, the nation's largest chain of abortion clinics.  Right-to-life supporters do not want their donations for fighting cancer to go to organizations that perform abortions.

Founded in 1968, the National Right to Life Committee (NRLC), the federation of 50 state right-to-life affiliates and more than 3,000 local chapters, is the nation's oldest and largest grassroots pro-life organization. Recognized as the flagship of the pro-life movement, NRLC works through legislation and education to protect innocent human life from abortion, infanticide, assisted suicide and euthanasia.
