The Senate Armed Services Committee voted 15 - 12 to attach an amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act to allow abortions on both domestic and overseas military bases. This reverses a policy which has been in place for decades except during the Clinton administration. Since appropriation bills originate in the House, this does not yet mandate funding.
According to Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America, "The vote repealing this discriminatory and dangerous ban is the first step to ensuring that servicewomen (sic) can use their own private money for abortion care when they are serving overseas."
Even if, to start, women pay for their own abortions, taxpayers foot the bill for the operation of the medical base, equipment, supplies, and other items used in the abortion.
Senator Scott Brown is a member of the Committee. He cast one of the 12 pro-life votes. Please call to thank him. Call today! (202) 224-4543 or (617)-565-3170 |
