A diligent member from Needham has found another dark side to the "Disclose Act", HR 5175.
Just imagine: a person makes a donation to MCFL to help to buy materials for us to distribute to students.
At some point we run a radio ad asking people to call their representatives about some legislation.
That forces MCFL to give that kind donor's name to the government which will post it on a web site to which we will have to link.
And of course, it will be illegal to tell anyone about an incumbent's voting record for four months before an election. We would be forbidden even to send an email like this one.
The sponsors of this bill know it is unconstitutional. It will go into effect 30 days after passage and there won't be time for the Supreme Court to stop it before the 2010 elections.. They know cheating is their only defense against getting trounced this fall!
The vote is expected Friday. If you have not yet called your Congressman and Senators Brown and Kerry, please call NOW! Tell them HR 5175 is an infringement on your First Amendment rights and you expect them to vote against it.
