For Immediate Release: For More Information: June 30, 2010 Marie Sturgis (617) 242-4199 Cell (617) 291-2093 Mass Citizens for Life Urges Kerry and Brown to Vote Against Kagan Confirmation Boston- Massachusetts Citizens for Life calls on Senators Scott Brown and John Kerry to vote against confirmation of Elena Kagan to the Supreme Court. The organization is concerned that Kagan espouses two ways to change the Constitution: the amendment process under Article 5 and judicial activism. Ms. Kagan obviously favors the activist approach. An example of this is her intervention in the Partial Birth Abortion Ban debate where she re-wrote the statement by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. The AGOC had said that "in the vast majority of cases, selection of the partial birth procedure is not necessary to avert serious adverse consequences to a woman's health." Kagan wanted to defeat the PBAB, so she added that the procedure ..."may be the best or most appropriate procedure in a particular circumstance to save the life or preserve the health of a woman." Many courts overturned the ban on the basis of her language, assuming it was that of the impartial medical experts at the ACOG. According to Anne Fox, President of MCFL, "In order to influence the outcome of a political case Kagan was willing, as a White House aide, to change the official statement of an organization to which she didn't even belong! This raises serious questions as to whether she can be trusted as a judge. We urge Senators Brown and Kerry not to take the chance with this life-time appointment". Massachusetts Citizens for Life was incorporated in 1973 and is the Commonwealth's largest pro-life organization. MCFL is an affiliate of the National Right to Life Committee. |
