Halloween and UNICEF

With Halloween coming this Thursday, I did some research on UNICEF.  These are the most recent pieces.  There is no reason to think anything has changed, but you can make your own decision.

Best,

Pro-life Victory in 5th CD Primary

Such good news!  Pro-life Frank Addivinola is now the Republican candidate in the Fifth Congressional District race for the seat formerly held by Ed Markey.  His opponent, State Senator Katherine Clark, takes an aggressively "pro-choice" position.  One of her campaign ads features her touting "reproductive rights."  Please spread the word.

People in that district are pro-life but tend to be registered as Democrats.  This is definitely one of those elections where life must trump party!

I'm sure you'll be hearing soon from the MCFL Federal PAC.

Congratulations, Frank!

Outrageous Globe Opinion Piece Must Be Answered

The Boston Globe published an opinion piece over the weekend which really must be answered.  If you don't read the Globe, here it is http://www.bostonglobe.com/opinion/2013/10/11/supreme-court-should-uphold-mass-buffer-zone-law/Waf1cn6pdAt4ZDsp6yp4kN/story.html

The piece is so poorly reasoned that it is easy to answer.  Letters to the Editor are limited to 200 words so you will not be able to address all the inaccuracies and misrepresentations.  Please pick something in the piece and write your answer.  I have included my Letter below.  Remember that members of the Court read the Globe and sister papers.

Thank you for getting on this!

Anne

Renee Loth,  A zone that should be left alone  (Globe, Oct 12th), maintains that the Massachusetts 35-foot Buffer Zone law is even-handed and that the Supreme Court should uphold it.

Loth undermines her whole argument by claiming the Buffer Zone is like the law which keeps political material 150 feet away from a polling place.  In Loth's world, her candidate would be allowed to distribute materials and talk to people right into the voting both.  It would only be the other candidate who could not.

Thus Loth has effectively made the argument against the Buffer Zone – the Zone singles out certain kinds of medical facilities and applies only to people with certain opinions, which, of course is what makes it unconstitutional.

Loth further undermines her argument by claiming the Supreme Court upheld the Buffer Zone in  Hill v Colorado.  The Colorado law applies to "any person outside any health care facility."  That makes it apply evenly to all, even the so-called "escorts" who hustle women in for abortions without letting them hear the information they need to make truly informed decisions.

I hope the amicus briefs filed by the people with Loth's opinions are as poorly reasoned as her piece.

Banquet Huge Success, Lila Rose Link

Our Banquet was wonderful!  People left so inspired.  I want to thank the amazing committee: Chair, Matt Hanafin, Chair Emeritus, Bea Martins, Paulette Martinville, John Curry, Connie and Cathleen Murphy, Madeline McComish, and June Newman.  Helen and David Cross provided lovely music, Ken Sullivan created the beautiful program, and so many others helped to make it a very special night.

Lila is delightful, so unassuming and so committed to saving lives.  We were honored that her mother, Annie, flew in from California and her aunt came down from the Worcester area.  Lila's contract rules out making a video.  Lila spoke again on Saturday morning in DC.  This is the video link to that talk,
http://www.frcaction.org/get.cfm?i=PG13J03  Much of what she said was similar.  The link is much shorter than her talk and easy to listen to.  If Lila's talk doesn't come up first, just scroll down the list until you find it and then scroll back up to watch the video.

At our Banquet, she gave more of her pro-life background and developed more fully the concept that life is the basic right for all and we must concentrate on that.  She also made the point that, because Massachusetts self-identifies as the most liberal state in the country, then our work is even more important here.  She stressed the darker the place the more significant the light of even one candle.  I think you can see why we were all so inspired.

For life,

Anne

5th CD Primaries This Tuesday, Oct 15

On Tuesday, primaries will be held for the Congressional seat vacated by Ed Markey.  The MCFL Federal PAC has not endorsed in this race but we do want you to know the positions of the candidates.  Constituents in the 5th CD, please be sure to vote.  Everyone in the state, please share this information with pro-life friends in the 5th.

Thanks,

Anne

All of the Democrats take firm pro-abortion positions.

On the Republican side, Frank Addivinola and Tom Tierney each answered the MCFL Questionnaire 100% pro-life.

Republican Mike Stopa
did not answer the MCFL Questionnaire.  According to yesterday's Globe, he is, "Personally opposed to abortion but believes Roe v. Wade is settled law and 'the right of a woman to have an abortion early in pregnancy should be protected'"

Both State Senate Primaries Yesterday in the 2nd Hampden & Hampshire Were Won By Candidates Who Are 100% Pro-life!

Madeline McComish, Chairman of the MCFL State PAC, which worked for and endorsed both candidates stated,  "It is always ideal to have an election where both candidates are pro-life.  The Nov 5th general election will be ideal."

Congratulations to David Bartley (D) and Donald Humason (R).

Such good news!

Death with Real Dignity

The Death with Real Dignity Conference held in Worcester last week was very informative.
Please listen to the presentations at http://1230radio.com/?page_id=63

As you know, the Doctor Prescribed Suicide bill has been filed again at the State House - as a bill, not a ballot question.  The wording in this version is even worse than the wording of Question 2!  Attorney Henry Luthin analyzed the differences and their implications.  One of the worst things is new wording that would force a doctor or facility which would not prescribe a lethal dose to get the patient to a doctor or facility that would.  So all doctors would be forced to participate.  Henry has graciously shared his power point presentation with us.  It is posted on our website.  I strongly suggest that you watch it.

This is not going away.  We must be prepared!

Obama Death-Care Begins Today: Some Protection for Your Loved Ones and Yourself

At the "Death with Real Dignity" conference, Allison Ledoux reminded attendees of two very important items.

First:  You must have a Health Care Proxy.  You must have it on file everywhere you possibly can.  You must make it part of your annual check-up to be sure your doctor still has a copy.  You must bring a copy with you to the hospital so you can use it instead of their generic one.
You can download, sign, and copy, National Right to Life Will to Live, https://www.nrlc.org/medethics/willtolive/
Or use the Health Care Proxy from the Massachusetts Catholic Conference, http://www.macatholic.org/proxy

Second, never agree to anything at first.  Keep asking what the person means and then take plenty of time to think before agreeing to anything.  I am afraid you have had an experience like mine.  An associate of my mother's doctor called me the day after my mother had had a heart attack.  She danced around what seemed to be a request not to use extraordinary means.  Only later did we discover that they had put on a Do Not Resuscitate order without permission from my mother.

And I would add an amazing help in making serious health care decisions.  That is Patricia Stewart's little workbook, The Healthcare Decision Guide for Catholics from http://sweetapplepress.com/healthcareguide.html

Things are not good but taking the steps above for ourselves and our loved ones will help.

Students, State House, Doctor-Prescribed Suicide, and Elections

There has been so much going on that I have not had a chance to tell you about the MCFL 2013 Summer Academy.  We had a spectacular group of 17 students including the winner of the National Right to Life Essay Contest and the student who represented Massachusetts at the National Right to Life Oratory Contest in DC.  The speakers, Linda Thayer, Eva Murphy, Matt Hanafin, Cori Connor-Morse, Pam Hibbard, Jamie Brunault, Dr Cyril Shea, and Katie Elrod gave the young people an incredible background on all the life issues.  One of them emailed me afterward to say, "Your kids are inspiring!  I was impressed with their speeches and all their great work."  We are also grateful to Katie O'Brien and Fr. Daniel Becker who made the local arrangements and Tina Poulin and John Triolo who managed the dinners.  We are already looking for the location for next summer.

Eva Murphy, MCFL Legislative Director, and I testified before the Revenue Committee on our bill which would allow us to redirect the tax money now used for abortions to the Baby Safe Haven program.  When we were there, we were thinking of every one of you who has ever testified.  We were so sorry that you missed the chance to testify before a committee that ran smoothly, efficiently, politely, and respectfully.  We were there for about an hour and got to make all our points

The doctor-prescribed suicide situation in New Jersey is still fragile.  NJ has elections for all offices this November.  It looks as though our people may do well in the elections.  That will cause the "lame duck" legislature to put on a real push to pass DPS while they still can.  As well as continuing your prayers, please think of any friends you may have in NJ and contact them to be ready to testify and contact their legislators.

Speaking of doctor-prescribed suicide, the "Death with Real Dignity" Conference in Worcester over the weekend was spectacular!  I'll be sending out information on how you can hear the talks and we'll be posting power points on our web-site.  Congratulations to Roger and Joyce Dubuque and their Witness for Life Committee who did an amazing job bringing together fine speakers and about 125 people.

In the Boston Mayoral election, both Connolly and Walsh favor legalized abortion.  One of our members informs us that Marty Walsh took the pro-life position when he publicly opposed Question 2, Doctor-Prescribed Suicide.  That issue is not going away.

More politics: in the 2nd Hampden and Hampshire Senate District (the "Knapik seat"), MCFL received back three questionnaires that were 100% pro-life.  Madeline McComish tells me some people have wondered how the PAC chose the candidates they endorsed. Madeline says that City Councilor David Bartley is the only pro-life Democrat response and he is a fine candidate, so that was obvious.  State Rep. Donald Humason and Mike Franco both returned 100% pro-life questionnaires in the Republican Primary.  Madeline says, "It has been the policy of the MCFL PAC since its very beginnings to support pro-life incumbents when they run for reelection or for another office. This is the case with Mr. Humason. He has served as a State Representative for many years and has always answered our questionnaires correctly.

"Also, NARAL ranks Donald Humason as "anti-choice."  The link below is to a newspaper article where Mr. Humason calls himself pro-life.
http://www.masslive.com/politics/index.ssf/2013/08/rep_donald_humason_to_seek_mas.html"

I want to add that I have received some emails quoting a website that claims Humason is not pro-life.  This is not correct.  The website is also incorrect on the life position of at least one other legislator in the same area.  Since MCFL sticks only to the life issues, we are confident that our ratings are accurate, more so than a website which covers a variety of issues.

THE BANQUET IS ALMOST SOLD OUT.  Hope to see you there!

Anne

"How could he eat in the midst of squalor and death?"

National Review Online has two excellent articles.  The first is about a new ebook by Steve Volk, a reporter for Philadelphia magazine: Gosnell's Babies: Inside the Mind of America's Most Notorious Abortion DoctorKathryn Jean Lopez reviews the book, http://www.nationalreview.com/article/359526/kermit-gosnell-our-monster-kathryn-jean-lopez

Conclusion: How can Gosnell  "... eat in the midst of squalor and death? How could he live with himself? Because 'his conscience was clear,' Volk concludes. 'His conscience was formed in a culture of death, after all, where a doctor doing harm has been promoted as a merciful thing.'  We, as a society, created the monster that Gosnell has become."  The facts reported in the book are unbelievable.  Whether you can stomach the book is one thing but you must read the article.

Also, at NRO is an article about a study of what we will pay for abortions under O-care.  You may remember Teresa Donovan who worked at Mass. Citizens a few years ago.  Her brother, Chuck, is one of the nicest, brightest people on our side in DC.  He reports on how taxpayers will be forced to pay for abortions under O-care.  As you read about the 71,000 - 111,5000 abortions we will fund per year, remember Massachusetts is one of those states Chuck mentions which has been paying 100% of medicaid abortions under court order for the past 35 years.  http://www.nationalreview.com/corner/359524/how-obamacare-will-subsidize-abortion-chuck-donovan

This is the link to the study, http://www.lozierinstitute.org/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/On-Point-Donovan-Multistate-Plans-Sept-2013.pdf

These are more reasons for us to "keep trucking."

Pro-life: Big Impact at the Big E

Alysse sent this beautiful note about the MCFL booth at the Eastern States Exposition.  Please note that over one million people go through the Big E.  The pro-lifers in the Springfield area do a magnificent job manning an incredible booth.  The Big E continues through this Sunday, the 29th.  Please stop by to see the Pro-Life Booth.

Anne

From Alysse:

It is truly a blessing to have a pro-life presence at the Big E every year. My friend and I had the privilege of volunteering at the PV-MCFL booth yesterday from 10am-2pm and it was truly an incredible experience. Many passing by were mostly drawn to the display case and the video which caught many people's attention. I really like the new posters and brochures this year. Fortunately, we had more people than we thought who would be so willing to sign the petition against abortion after 20 weeks since at that stage they CAN feel pain. But I would like to share with you a particular instance that was truly incredible. A gentleman, Lawrence Bethke, approached our booth and was proud to share this beautiful story, as a pro-lifer. He shared the beautiful story about his son, Elias, who was born 13 weeks early (at 26 weeks) and spent 7 months in the NICU. Elias was special needs and suffered many medical conditions. He was such a happy baby and received so much love and care before God took him at 31 months old. Elias touched so many lives in such a special way in such a short amount of time, it was unbelievable. Being moved by this story, even Lawrence the father of this little angel was in tears sharing this with us. He wanted me to pass along his son's story and to share the following videos of his son, Elias, on YouTube to MCFL.

There is a facebook page called: Elias' Journey.

Also, if you just search "Elias Bethke" on youtube, the first three videos are the ones to watch reflecting Elias' short life and beautiful story. He's an inspiration to us all! It's very moving!!

Planned Parenthood Endorses in Tuesday's Election, 9/24

Pro-life people in Boston are telling us:

"Planned Parenthood has endorsed Jack F. Kelly, III for the at-large race for City Council.  Marty Walz, President of Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts did robo-calls for him yesterday.  People have four at-large votes on Tuesday, so they should be sure one is not for Mr. Kelly."

Given all the "pro-choice" candidates PP had to choose from for Mayor and City Council, Kelly must be a humdinger of a pro-ab.  You will remember, Marty Walz resigned as State Representative to take over PP, which felt it needed greater political connections.

If you don't live in Boston, please forward to anyone you know who does.  Also remind them that David James Wyatt is a pro-life candidate for Mayor.

If there are any further developments before Tuesday, we'll let you know.

America One of Only FOUR Countries That Allow Abortions Post-Viability!

Clarke Forsythe, Esq. was a close friend of our Dr. Joe Stanton.  Dr. Joe was a founder of Americans United for Life, where Clarke has worked for many years.  Clarke has written an important new book, Abuse of Discretion: The Inside Story of Roe v. Wade.  The next MCFL News will have an interview with Clarke and extensive review of the book.  In the meantime, the Weekly Standard has found a shocking fact (see below).

N.B.: Jonathan Last, author of the article also has an extremely well-researched blockbuster book, What to Expect When No One's Expecting: America's Coming Demographic Disaster.  Not only do we have the right arguments on our side, we have some intellectual stars articulating those arguments.

Happy reading!

Anne

Abortion Nation

America is only 1 of 4 countries to allow abortions post-viability.

It's easy to become inured to the state of abortion in the United States, but every so often someone sends a shock to the system.

In a new book about the history of Roe, Abuse of Discretion, lawyer Clarke Forsythe combs through the historical record of the Supreme Court's decision, from case files to personal papers, to show exactly how pell-mell the verdict was. And in the course of all this he highlights how out-of-the-norm America's abortion regime is.

Here's Forsythe:

The United States is an outlier when it comes to the scope of the abortion "right." The United States is one of approximately ten nations (of 195) that allow abortion after fourteen weeks of gestation. The others are: Canada, China, Great Britain, North Korea, the Netherlands, Singapore, Sweden, Western Australia, and Vietnam. When it comes to allowing abortion for any reason after viability, however, the United States is joined only by Canada, North Korea, and China. The United States got into this situation because after the second round of arguments in Roe and Doe, the Justices abruptly decided to expand the abortion right they were creating to fetal viability—and then beyond. For forty years, this abrupt decision has had profound implications for late-term abortions, live-birth abortions, and women's health.

To be sure, many nations disapprove of abortion de jure, yet allow it de facto. But this is a distinction with a difference because it shows that the culture still has moral bearings, even if it frequently sets them aside in the name of expediency.

Sponsor the Next Lila Rose

Dear Friend of Life,

This year we are very excited that Lila Rose is speaking at our Banquet on October 10th!  The brave and creative documentary work by Lila and her young companions has educated countless people about Planned Parenthood, the major abortion provider in this country and about the abuses they regularly practice.  Her presentation will be so important!

We have had many inquiries from high school and college pro-life groups who want their students to be able to hear Lila and be inspired for their work.  We know that the future of life-saving activities will depend on these very students!

We need to sponsor these students to attend the Banquet.  I am hoping that you will agree with me about the importance of having as many students as possible attend.  We have set the student rate at $30.00 per student, which is under the actual cost.  That means that you could host 10 students for $300.00, you could host 30 students for $900.00, etc.  This is a wonderful opportunity for you to ensure the future of pro-life work in the state and country.

Of course, we would love to have you attend the Banquet also, to break bread with us and hear Lila.  Please click here to purchase your tickets and/or sponsor students  http://masscitizensforlife.org/get-involved/events/2013-fundraising-banquet/

Thank you for your commitment to the future!

Anne

Updates

The MCFL State PAC wants you to know that, at the recent debate among the candidates for Mayor of Boston, one candidate took a pro-life position and said that he gives pro-life people someone for whom to vote.  He is DAVID JAMES WYATT.

The New Jersey Alliance Against Doctor Prescribed Suicide met.  John Kelly, Rita Marker, Jennifer Popik, I, and others from out-of-state met with them.  I was very impressed with the committed people of New Jersey.  They had representatives from disability, medical, faith-based, and pro-life groups.  The doctor-prescribed legislation could come to the floor at any minute!  Compassion and Choices (formerly Hemlock Society) has a half dozen paid lobbyists who have been working the state for a year.  Our people really need our prayers to get their votes identified and to keep this dangerous legislation from coming to the floor.

In the two Massachusetts State Representative races this week, the pro-life candidates lost.  There have been a number of State Rep races since last fall's election.  We are even with the same number of new pro-lifers as we had in those districts before.

I want you to know about Congressman Markwayne Mullin of Oklahoma and his wife, Christie,, http://www.breitbart.com/Big-Government/2013/08/30/Oklahoma-Congressman-Adopts-Twins-Separated-At-3-Months
It is a beautiful story which is especially heartening for us, who have no pro-life representation in DC.

Life is beautiful!  You and I are blessed to be working to protect our fellow human beings!
