There are some good stories today, including one of a woman who died.  Doctors delivered her baby, discovered her heart problem, put in a pace-maker which brought her back to life and - she and the baby are doing just fine. Preventing Gosnelling in Massachusetts

"Dr. Gosnell is only the front man; and the real trial has only just begun. The defendant is the abortion license in America."      Prof. Robbie George who spoke at 2011 MCFL Mother's Day Dinner   Are there facilities practicing in the Gosnell manner here in Massachusetts?  We can't be sure - because Massachusetts has essentially NO regulations.  In the 1970's, Massachusetts Citizens for Life was instrumental in passing a law which required, among other things, that abortion facilities have fire extinguishers and elevators that would accommodate stretchers.  This sensible law was overturned.  Massachusetts does not even require these basic safeguards for women.  Abortion facilities have much lower standards than any other type of surgical facility, and so-called "doctor's offices" like the one where Laura Hope Smith died, have no oversight at all!   Massachusetts has the 9th highest abortion rate in the country! More than 22,000 babies are killed in our state every year.  That has to stop!  We desperately need our state to actively protect the lives and health of mothers and their babies.   Massachusetts Citizens for Life is starting a campaign to make the Massachusetts Department of Public Health reveal whether or not they have any standards or do any inspections of abortion facilities.  We will be pressing them to answer these questions and to apply the same standards to abortion facilities as they do to other ambulatory medical facilities.   As we embark on this endeavor over the next few weeks we hope that you will get involved in our effort.  You can make a difference!    Now that the general public is aware of the Gosnell atrocities, we have the opportunity to shed light on other Gosnells who are operating in the shadows, possibly right here in Massachusetts.   Please help with a donation to this live-saving effort.  http://masscitizensforlife.org   Thank you for your much-needed support!   Anne

DPS in Vermont: Finally, the Rest of the Story

We have all been wondering exactly what happened in Vermont.  According to Vermont State Representative Anne Donahue in a letter to the Barre-Montpelier Times Argus, "Our radical new social policy that endorses having doctors write prescriptions that will kill their patients, cobbled together by just a few individuals from bits and pieces of language drafted on the fly, was passed by two votes in the Senate and 10 votes in the House." "There Must be a Record"

Every once in a while, we read an article that says exactly what we have been trying to say.  This article by J.R. Dunn articulates so much - that we have reached a turning point, that it needs to be recorded, that we need to turn "Gosnell" into a verb, noun, etc and use it on every occasion.  It is a long article.  The good part starts right after the Obama picture.  The author talks about a book.  Jack Cashel, who did a marvelous documentary video of the March for Life comes to mind.  There are other writers who have done this kind of work.  Please pray that someone will take it on.  As Jim McFadden always said, "There must be a record." Live From the State House and Vermont Finale

Vermont has definitely passed an Oregon bill - but worse - and the governor will sign today.  It took the death lobby eight years, countless treasure and incredible arm-twisting.  Remember: Maine and Connecticut stopped bills in committee in the last few weeks and, of course, MASSACHUSETTS overcame a 50-point deficit to defeat at polls.   Hearings today were supposed to go from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm.  At 1:00 pm, the Committee actually moved to Gardner Auditorium.  By that point, Linda Thayer and Marie O'Donnell had been called.  Everyone else testified in favor of HB 450, "An act relative to healthy youth," which is about sex ed.  According to the people testifying, HB-450 would solve all problems in society.  Here are some provisions:   Sexual Health education shall…stress the importance of effectively using contraceptives and barrier methods to prevent unintended pregnancy and STI's Teach the students the skills to effectively negotiate and implement safer sexual activity Information on abstinence may not be provided separate from information on contraceptives and disease prevention Sex ed must be consistent with the Massachusetts Comprehensive Health curriculum framework establish a procedure to enable parents to bring to the attention of the department any sexual health curriculum or program which they believe is inconsistent with the requirements of this act counts the number of students who opt out of sexual heal ed Does not seek to determine whether schools have notified parents explicitly as to sex ed content        The problem, among others, is that this is "Opt out."  As Representative Betty Poirier testified, it is necessary that these programs be "Opt in," so that parents can exercise their rights and responsibilities.  HB-433, HB-466, require that parents "opt in" their children to these kinds of classes.   Please write a little testimony in favor of HB-433, HB-466 and opposed to HB-450  Send it to the Chairs: Senator Sonia Chang-Diaz, 617-722-1673 Sonia.Chang-Diaz@masenate.gov  and Representative Alice Peisch 617-722-2070 Alice.Peisch@mahouse.gov.  Be sure to include your name and address and request that your testimony be shared with entire committee.   At the hearings, I met a number of wonderful pro-life people I hadn't known.  You are the best!  Anne

The Boston Globe online came through with typical flying colors this morning  where it announces that Kermit Gosnell was found guilty in the death of three "fetuses that prosecutors said were alive when they were removed." We were upset when the media did not cover the trial.  Now we get this deceptive coverage. We are very fortunate that The National Right to Life News, LifeNews, American Thinker, etc covered the trial and the basic points of law and logic. Another Monster Helps Teach the Value of Unborn Life

According to news reports today, Ariel Castro, the man accused of holding three women captive in his house for more than a decade, could face the death penalty if it's determined he is responsible for the deaths of the victims' unborn children, prosecutors said Thursday. Bringing Abortion on Demand to Ireland. Why Would BC Honor the Architect?

Beth graduated from Boston College.  She sent the links below and the contact information.  She is horrified that BC is honoring Enda Kenney, Taoiseach (Prime Minister) of Ireland by giving him an honorary degree and having him speak at graduation. Kenney is trying to change Ireland's abortion laws which now protect babies and their mothers to make them even more permissive than ours.   In 1982, Ireland had a referendum to keep abortion illegal.  MCFL sent over thousands of packets of materials to help with the winning effort. Doctor-Prescribed Suicide in Vermont!

DPS has passed in Vermont!  The final vote in the Senate came because an outspoken opponent of DPS flipped.  So the Senate originally passed a bill that didn't change the ways things are now.  Then the House passed Oregon-style language.  Our hope was that the Senate would hold out so the two bills would have to go to Conference Committee to be reconciled - which held great hope.  Vote on Tuesday was ok.  On Wednesday, language was added and passed which makes the Vermont language worse than Oregon.  It is expected that the House will accept this language, which means there will be no conference committee. Our amazing people in Vermont have not given up so the story is not over for sure. As soon as it is over for sure, the death lobby group, Compassion and Choices, formerly the Hemlock Society (which has an amazing PR machine), will be all over the national news claiming that the dam has broken and everyone in the country will soon have the "right" to control his death (most suicides are committed by men). Just remember, when the people spoke, it was to defeat DPS here!  And thank you all again for that vital victory! Anne

Your Testimony Needed, May 14th

Testimony concerning "sex ed" bills will be heard by the Education Joint Committee next Tuesday, May 14th at 10:00 am in Room A-1 at the State House.  Your presence and testimony will be very powerful.  As the 14th gets closer, if you find you cannot get there in person, you may submit written testimony to the Chairs: Senator Sonia Chang-Diaz, 617-722-1673 Sonia.Chang-Diaz@masenate.gov and Representative Alice Peisch, 617-722-2070 Alice.Peisch@mahouse.gov.  Be sure to include your name and address and request that your testimony be shared with entire committee. The government will take over all aspects of education, particularly those having to do with morality unless we stop them!  As Linda Thayer says, "Parents do not send their children to school to learn how to get secret abortions." We support: HB 333, HB 466, HB 431, HB 440, and HB 452 (only this will be heard on May 30th).  These are basically bills which ensure parent's rights. We oppose: HB 421, SB 202, HB 366, HB 450, SB 209, HB 522, and HB 2092  These bills are of the Health Curriculum Guidelines type that we have been fighting for years. What is Happening at the Gosnell Trial?

By Dave Andrusko, May 3, 2013 The Common Pleas Court jury of seven women and five men have finished their deliberations for the week in the murder trial of abortionist Kermit Gosnell. They will return on Monday, but not before having apparently moved on from considering charges against Gosnell's co-defendant (according to multiple news sources including the Philadelphia Inquirer and CNN) and on to the 72-year-old abortionist charged with five counts of murder. Eileen O'Neill, 56, is charged with six counts of theft by deception (she is accused of posing as a licensed doctor) that form the basis of racketeering and conspiracy counts for her alleged role in a "corrupt organization." The jury, CNN reported "asked to be given the written definition of RICO charges, and a property receipt for the medications removed from the clinic and put into evidence. RICO charges extend from the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act. "After consulting with attorneys, Judge Jeffrey Minehart answered the jury in the deliberation room. Gosnell and his co-defendant, Eileen O'Neill, 56, were not in the courtroom." However the most important request of the day was clearly for records compiled the day Gosnell's abortion clinic was raided, February 18, 2010. According to the Inquirer's Joseph A. Slobodzian, they asked for the police property receipt for all medicines and drugs removed from the Women's Medical Society. Why is that significant? It is of critical importance in the context of another request—"identifying details to help them differentiate the four babies – known thus far as babies A, C, D and E – allegedly killed by Gosnell or his staff after they were born live during illegal late-term abortions." Jack McMahon, Gosnell's flamboyant defense attorney, has stated flatly that no babies were born alive—that every movement, twitch, even scream witnesses testified to were simply "reflexes." They weren't born alive, McMahon argued, because Gosnell administered the drug Digoxin that would have killed  the babies in utero. But (a) police found no evidence of Digoxin when they searched the abortion clinic, and (b) according to prosecutors, "Gosnell had stopped using the drug to save money," Slobodzian explained. "Instead, prosecutors allege, Gosnell gave patients heavy doses of the labor-inducing drug Cytotec so they would spontaneously abort. If the fetus was alive, Gosnell allegedly would then cut the spine to kill it." CNN summarized the bundle of charges lodged against Gosnell who, prosecutors say, made millions off of illegal late-term abortions: "The [four] babies Gosnell is accused of killing include one that a former employee testified whined after it was expelled from its mother; one that a former employee testified was a large baby boy that breathed before having its neck snipped and was placed into a plastic box the size of a shoebox; one whose neck was snipped after an employee played with the baby; and one that was delivered into a toilet and appeared to be swimming before being scooped up and having its neck snipped." In addition, "Gosnell also is charged with conspiracy, abortion at 24 or more weeks of pregnancy, theft, corruption of minors, solicitation and other related offenses. He and O'Neill have pleaded not guilty." Gosnell also stands accused of one count of third degree murder in the 2009 death of Karnamaya Mongar, who was 41. Prosecutors say Gosnell's untrained, unlicensed assistants administered an overdose of Demerol, a powerful painkiller. Last week, without explanation, Judge Minehart threw out three of the seven first-degree murder counts, one count of infanticide, and all five abuse-of-corpse charges which were about the fetal body parts authorities found when they raided Gosnell's abortion clinic, ironically not because of abortion but because they believed he was running an illegal "pill mill." In his testimony, Philadelphia Chief Medical Examiner Sam Gulino told the jury about an "unprecedented" task. According to the Slobodzian, that task was "Examining bag after bag of frozen fetuses removed from Kermit Gosnell's West Philadelphia abortion clinic." Without guidance what to do, Gulino said "he finally began opening the red and blue plastic bags that were crammed into Gosnell's freezer and found the remains of 47 aborted fetuses ranging in age from 12 weeks – the end of the first trimester – to late second trimester and beyond the 24-week ceiling under Pennsylvania's abortion law. "Some were stored in makeshift containers such as a cut-down plastic distilled water jug or juice container. Other remains, body parts, were stored in cat and dog food containers."

Rose Drives Save Lives!

Welcome to the beautiful month of May!  Rose drives to benefit the educational efforts of Massachusetts Citizens for Life are taking place across the state in May and June.  We want to thank all of those volunteers who are coordinating the drives or helping out in any way! You see, the rose drive has always been a major fundraiser for MCFL but is becoming even more essential in these tough economic times because it can help make up the shortfall as individuals may not be able to be as generous at the moment as they once were. Important State House Hearings, May 14th! Save the Date.

Who Says Babies Are Not Born Alive From Abortions? See Video

The media, acting as mouthpieces for the pro-death forces, would like to make us think that the Gosnell facility has nothing to do with abortions because aborted babies are not born alive. Well, President Obama certainly thought babies were being born alive when, in the Illinois legislature, he spoke and voted against protecting them. Lila Rose's Live Action has again come through to educate the public at just the right moment: Live Action's new undercover videos Since the purpose of abortion is to produce a dead baby - no matter where the death occurs - the abortionists make sure that happens.  The "toxic substance" mentioned in the video is a new wrinkle - different from "snipping" their spinal cords to kill the little ones. We know there are problems in Massachusetts.  We'll be working on that in the coming months. I want to remind you that we are very fortunate that Lilsa Rose is going to speak at our Banquet on October 10th.  Lila spoke to our Youth Conference while she was still a student.  She was so impressive and yet so unassuming.  She has accomplished so much since then.  It is a real honor for us to have her. Walk to Aid Mothers and Children Was Delightful!

As Matt said, "God was with us at the Walk."  The weather was absolutely perfect and La Salette is really beautiful in the spring.  We had the nicest people:  Lloyd, who has 90th birthday coming up, Julia, the Walk baby whose smile sparkles, has her 2nd in a couple of days, Allison, whom I haven't seen since she was in college, was down from New Hampshire with her five adorable little ones, the first people to register who came all the way from Great Barrington, and, of course, many, many youth groups..  When I arrived at the Monument to the Unborn at the end of the Walk. the courtyard in front was chock full of strollers. Definitely our kind of Walk. The Walk Committee: Helen and David Cross, June Newman, Elinor Rafferty, Connie and Cathleen Murphy, Madeline McComish, Ken Evans, Ed Boylan, Matt and Judy Hanafin, Dana Marrocco, and Janet Callahan did a marvelous job!  The people at La Salette were so gracious and accommodating! The changes in date and venue had an impact.  The Walk was perfect in every way but it was one of our smaller Walks.  You know what, that is ok.  Much as we love to see each other, the main purpose of the Walk is to raise money for the beneficiary groups who help pregnant women, their children, and post-abortive women.   This year is different because we have the on-line sponsors and donors.  If you were not able to make the Walk, please go right away to www.respectlifewalk.org and click "Register."  You still may donate to a walker, team, or beneficiary or simply make a donation.  It is never too late to save a baby or a mother. This is to remind you that the MCFL Federal PAC has endorsed Michael Sullivan (R) for U.S. Senator.  If you are a Republican or unenrolled, you can pick up a Republican ballot and vote for Sullivan. The MCFL State PAC has endorsed Nick Collins (D) in the First Suffolk State Senate District (South Boston and Dorchester).  You will need to be a Democrat or unenrolled to vote for Collins in this race.
