Hearing on Physician Assisted Suicide Bill - follow-up report

logo

I testified, on behalf of Mass. Citizens, against the Physician Assisted Suicide Bill at the hearing along with representatives from The MA Hospice Association, The MA Catholic Conference, and ten other citizens who had a personal interest in opposing the bill.  The story from the State House News Service is below.  It was a pretty tame hearing.

It is worrisome, however, that the "push calls" are being made, that "the upcoming euthanasia hearings" were featured on numerous news broadcasts the day before the hearings, that Marjorie Eagan wrote a column yesterday forcefully advocating PAS, that the Herald ran another story that seemed to agree with the bill, and that a number of newspapers covered the hearing.  Mass Citizens will keep on top of this and let you know!

Marie Sturgis, Legislative Director

STATE CAPITOL BRIEFS - TUESDAY, FEB. 23, 2010
STATE HOUSE NEWS SERVICE

LAWMAKERS WEIGH ASSISTED SUICIDE MEASURE
When John Norton was a teenager in the 1950s, told by his doctors he had Lou Gehrig's Disease and less than five years to live, he would've "happily" taken a pill to end his life. More than 50 years later, Norton now calls it a "tremendous blessing" that he wasn't able to end his life. He told his story Tuesday to a handful of lawmakers considering a proposal to sanction assisted suicide in Massachusetts. Norton said that if such laws existed when he was first diagnosed, he might not be alive today. Opponents of the proposal (H 1468), sponsored by Rep. Louis Kafka (D-Stoughton), said too many opportunities for error exist in the current proposal. The proposal would allow patients medically determined to have fewer than six months to live to request medication to end their lives. Backers of the legislation, dubbed "An Act Relative to Death with Dignity," say it empowers suffering patients to choose death rather than prolonging their illness. Even one supporter of the proposal said he worried that the bill failed to safeguard against potential errors. William Stearns, who said he lost his mother, father and sister to terminal illnesses, said the proposal would require written or oral notification, which some terminal patients are incapable of providing. He also noted that a patient who obtains lethal medication could inadvertently leave it somewhere accessible to children or unauthorized users.

Physician Assisted Suicide threatens MA!

logo

There has been a bill at the State House, filed at the request of a citizen, which didn't seem to be going anywhere.  Now people around the state are receiving "push calls" designed to convince them that Physician Assisted Suicide (PAS) is a good thing.

The Joint Committee on the Judiciary of the Massachusetts General Court (state legislature) has just announced that House Bill 1468, An Act Relative to Death with Dignity, will be on the docket for a hearing scheduled for tomorrow, Tuesday, February 23, 2010 at 1 pm in Room B1 at the Massachusetts State House in Boston.  Anyone who wants to testify against the bill should contact Marie Sturgis at the Massachusetts Citizens for Life office (617-242-4199 X 227).

A copy of the bill can be found online at http://www.mass.gov/legis/bills/house/186/ht01pdf/ht01468.pdf;

MCFL is looking for a part-time book keeper

logo

We are looking for a part-time book keeper.

If you are interested, you must be proficient in Quick Books, reconcile monthly bank statements, prepare monthly projections and monthly financial reports, periodically audit the monthly reports of local chapters, help prepare yearly budget, prepare materials for yearly audit, and pay bills.  The hours depend on the work that needs to be done but would be around 10 per week.  Some work can be done at home, but much of it needs to be done in the MCFL office at the Schrafft Center in Charlestown. We would like you to be available for eighteen months or more.

If you are interested, please send resume to Marie, msturgis@masscitizensforlife.org

Censorship in Fitchburg! Buffer Zone Appeal Date

logo

Last night, the Fitchburg City Council met to discuss the proposed Planned Parenthood facility.  Pro-lifers have testified, demonstrated, written to the landlords, etc.  They were prepared last night with legal documentation showing what the Council could do.  Chris Hanley, MCFL Chapter Chair, reports that the general public was muzzled.  When citizens tried to speak, a councilor interrupted at every mention of the words, "Planned Parenthood" or "abortion".  Only councilor Rosemary Reynolds spoke up for the rights of citizens to be heard.  She challenged the other councilors to study the situation objectively.

Demonstrations will continue, but the key, according to Chris, is contacting the landlords.  Post cards saying "No to Planned Parenthood" should be mailed to:

Bruce Richard                                                              Christopher Kancades
168 Harris Rd.                                                              10 Rock Brook Way
Ashburnham, MA 01430                                              Boxford, MA 01920

Call: Office phone: 781-858-7475

SUPREME COURT WILL DECIDE WHETHER TO GIVE CERT (HEAR THE CASE) ON THE BUFFER ZONE APPEAL ON FRIDAY, MARCH 5, 2010.  We'll keep you posted.

Please check out our new online giving program.

Win trip to DC, private lunch in House Members Dining Room, etc

logo
This is the time of year when we at Mass. Citizens work to renew membership and attract new members.

We have had a delightful prize offered to us for the person who brings the most new members in to Mass Citizens for Life between now and April 15th.  Congressman Steve Stockman, former pro-life congressman from Texas, has offered a private tour of the House Chambers and lunch in the Members Dining Room on Monday, April 19th for the winner and a guest.   We will fly the winner and guest to DC for their inside adventure!  A different date can be arranged if necessary.  The winner must obtain at least 38 new members.

You can collect many memberships and turn them all in together or have people sign up as usual.  Be sure to let Dana, ddaniels@masscitizensforlife.org, know the names of those you recruit.

The trip sounds so exciting.  Good luck!
Anne

Please help!

People are constantly telling us they want to be able to donate to MCFL on an automatic basis: monthly, quarterly, or whatever.

In looking at programs, we had two concerns.  We wanted to insure the safety and security of the program.  Our Sunday Visitor now administers Online Giving secure sites.  We am very comfortable about working with them.

Second, we didn't want you to miss any of the important news that is contained in the fund raising letters.  If you decide to give automatically I promise to send you mailings, invitations, etc. that you need to keep up with all the news that isn't in the MCFL News.

You benefit from the ease of automatic giving.

You don't need to write checks, keep track of the last time you have given, or hunt for reply envelopes. There is no need to share confidential credit card or account information - you can enter it directly into the Online Giving secure site.  You can take advantage of credit card benefits like airline mileage or cash bonuses.

Mass. Citizens benefits by having a much more user friendly web site.  We are able to plan our yearly budget and activities with more assurance.  People will be less likely to mean to give but forget.  Funds you contribute will go directly to programs rather than being eaten up by direct mail costs.

I hope you will consider this program!  Please check it out.

Thank you for all you do for life!
Anne

As former General Colin Powell observed in 1993 (before bowing to pressures of political correctness), "...it would be prejudicial to good order and discipline to try to integrate gays and lesbians in the current military structure...Skin color is a benign, nonbehavioral characteristic. Sexual orientation is perhaps the most profound of human behavioral characteristics. Comparison of the two is a convenient but invalid argument."
Prevent gays and lesbians from showering with heterosexual war fighters in our armed services.
