News on Fr Pavone. Sen. Brown votes right.

Ernie Ohlhoff, Director of Outreach for National Right to Life, sent us this update:    "This email is offered in response to a number of questions I have received regarding the status of Fr. Frank Pavone and Priests for Life. Over the past two weeks I have had several discussions with Fr. Frank Pavone and other Priests for Life staff. The following is the most current information which I have received concerning the present status of Priests for Life and Fr. Frank Pavone:    1.    Priests for Life is fully functional. All staff and services are continuing to function. 2.    Fr. Frank Pavone is staying at a convent in Amarillo and offers daily Mass for the Franciscan Sisters. 3.    Fr. Frank continues to be the National Director of Priests for Life but he is not traveling at this time. 4.    Fr. Frank can be contacted by email at nd@priestsforlife.org."   President Obama nominated Caitlin Halligan, who has been called radical by social issues conservatives, to fill the open seat on the DC Circuit Court which has not been filled since Chief Justice John Roberts was confirmed to the Supreme Court in 2005.      The D.C. Circuit has jurisdiction over constitutional challenges and contentious decisions by federal government agencies and is a stepping-stone to the Supreme Court.        Halligan filed an amicus brief with the Supreme Court arguing that pro-life protestors were actually engaging in extortion. The court rejected that legal theory 8-1. (NB Not only is she radical, but not very competent) She would have been dangerous on the court. The effect of Sen. Brown's Dec 6th vote against closure is that Halligan will not receive the appointment. Again, thanks to Sen. Brown for blocking another problem judge. Mass Medical Society Vote

Today, at its Interim Meeting, the Massachusetts Medical Society's House of Delegates voted, 178 to 56, to retain the Society's long-standing opposition to physician assisted suicide. The HOD unanimously passed addition language endorsing quality end-of-life care.  Efforts to remove the statement opposing PAS began at the Annual Meeting last May. Proponents of the change cited the upcoming 2012 ballot question to legalize physician assisted suicide, which some call "doctor prescribed suicide", as a reason to look at the issue. Informal public opinion polls are currently at odds with the MMS results. The MMS voted by more than ¾ to oppose physician assisted suicide. The general public right now seems to support the concept. The difference is probably explained by the fact that doctors are more familiar with end-of-life issues and have been thinking about them for longer. This indicates that, as the opponents of the ballot question are able to educate the public, support for PAS/DPS will dwindle. THIS IS HUGE! The Massachusetts Alliance Against Doctor Prescribed Death will be able to trumpet this vote far and wide. Your prayers were entirely efficacious - and will continue to be, please God. Urgent prayer request from Anne

The Massachusetts Medical Society will vote tomorrow on a motion to withdraw their opposition to Doctor Prescribed Suicide. They are hearing testimony today. Many of our doctors are testifying. Most of the people who signed the original petition are important members of the MMS, so this is a real battle. This would give the proponents the chance to say that the MMS has withdrawn its opposition - huge for them! Please pray very hard today and tomorrow that the MMS will restore its opposition to DPS. Pro-Life victory on "minibus" bill in U S Senate

Thanks to all of you who called Senator Brown's office. Since Harry Reid was trying to combine three appropriation bill into one, the bill, which included seven pro-abortion provisions, required unanimous consent to proceed. Republican Senators David Vitter, Louisiana, Jim DeMint, South Carolina, Rand Paul, Kentucky, Mike Lee, Utah and others prevented the bill from proceeding. That means the Senate will vote on the House version which does not contain any of the dangerous pro-abortion provisions. Doug Johnson, lobbyist for National Right to Life, warned, however, that there are likely to be further attempts by the Senate Democratic leadership to attach pro-abortion provisions to various funding bills for the rest of the year. "We'll be keeping a hawk-like gaze on all of these appropriations bills," Johnson said. Many of you have told me you called Senator Brown's office. Good for you - and thanks! Congratulations to Cardinal Sean, hear Rita Marker, SCOTUS

The nation's Catholic bishops have elected Cardinal Sean O'Malley, Archbishop of Boston, as the new chairman of the Bishops' Committee on Pro-life Activities. In Massachusetts, we have always valued Cardinal Sean's strong commitment to life. We at MCFL wish him every success in this most-important role. People who have heard Rita Marker speak are raving about her presentation. You may still hear her on Wednesday in Warren from noon to 2:30, lunch included, at St. Stanislaus Hall, 2270 Main Street. Rita will also speak in Quincy on Thursday night at the Kennedy Center, 440 East Squantum Street, at 7:00pm. Sponsored by the Quincy Department of Elder Services.   The Supreme Court will hear arguments next March about Obamacare. This allows plenty of time for a decision in late June, just four months before Election Day.   The justices announced they will hear an extraordinary five-and-a-half hours of arguments from lawyers on the constitutionality of the individual mandate.   In addition to deciding whether the law's central mandate is constitutional, the justices will also determine whether the rest of the law can take effect even if that central mandate is held unconstitutional. You will remember that the Democratic leadership wouldn't allow the law to go through the proper conference process after Scott Brown was elected. This means there is no severability clause. If the individual mandate is unconstitutional, then, the whole law should be.   Justice Elena Kagan served as solicitor general in the Obama administration when the law was being formulated.
