You can help stop U S funding of China One-Child Policy - this weekend

Forced abortion and sterilization still official policy in China!   In the 1980s, President Reagan withheld all U.S. contributions to the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) because UNFPA co-managed China's population control program. Under the Bush administration, the U.S. withheld funds for the UNFPA from America's annual contributions to the United Nations due to UNFPA's complicity in China's one-child policy. The Obama administration has resumed contributions to UNFPA.   Starting now through the weekend, you can vote to get this issue to the U S House floor. Senate GOP Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky, just made the prediction on the conservative radio talk show of Laura Ingraham, "This is a very bad nominee. He testified against both Chief Justice Roberts and Justice Alito in the most strident of terms. That vote will occur after lunch today. I'm optimistic that we will be able to defeat the nomination." Senior Republicans launched an all-out push to quash the nomination, urging their entire conference to support a GOP-led filibuster. "(Liu's) record reflects a carefully honed and calculated philosophy that he developed and advanced over the course of his brief career in the ivory towers of academia and which threatens the American tradition of limited constitutional government," Sens. Charles Grassley of Iowa, top Republican on the Judiciary Committee, and senior panel member Jeff Sessions of Alabama, wrote in a letter, obtained by Fox News, to their GOP colleagues Wednesday. In a most ominous sign, former GOP members of the so-called "Gang of 14," who narrowly averted a judicial crisis back in 2005 that nearly shut down the Senate, are lining up against Liu, as well.  The somewhat undefined threshold developed by the bipartisan group back then stated that a nominee should be filibustered only under "extraordinary circumstances." "The nomination of Mr. Goodwin Liu does rise to a level of 'extraordinary circumstances,' and therefore McCain will seek to filibuster the nomination," read a statement by the office of former gang member John McCain. In a letter to Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., in 2010 the Arizona Republican cites Liu's writings and indicates the nominee appears to be an activist. Same goes for McCain's fellow gang member, Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-SC, whose spokesman tells Fox News that Liu is "an ideologue." The opposition to Liu is multi-pronged, with most Republicans accusing the nominee of wanting to make law, not interpret it. Some view Liu, 40, as too young for a lifetime appointment to the bench, fearing he might soon be propelled to the Supreme Court. But it is Liu's scathing critique of then-Judge Samuel Alito, President George W. Bush's nominee for the High Court, that appeared to sting the most. Paralleling the late Sen. Ted Kennedy's dress-down of failed Supreme Court nominee Robert Bork, Liu said in Alito's America "police may shoot and kill an unarmed boy" and "the FBI may install a camera where you sleep," and he went on to say in that America "a black man may be sentenced by an all-white jury for killing a white man absent analysis showing discrimination." Liu has apologized numerous times for the comments, calling them "inartful," but Republicans have balked. The nominee, who has endured a rare two confirmation hearings with more than five hours of testimony, enjoys bipartisan support outside Congress, including famed former prosecutor Ken Starr. Democrats need at least seven Republicans to keep the Liu nomination alive, but their GOP possibilities are fading fast. "I'm not going to vote for that," Sen. Johnny Isakson, R-Ga., told Fox News, "It's the perfect definition of 'extraordinary circumstances'. I was here when the confirmation hearings of Judge Alito were going on. You know, I can understand a difference of philosophy, but there should be an evenness of temperament. Judicial temperament, to me, is the most important thing a judge can possess, and I think in that circumstance alone, he demonstrated less than what I would consider appropriate judicial temperament." Chairman Leahy reminded his colleagues recently that Liu received the highest ranking from the American Bar Association, a unanimous "well qualified," a coveted endorsement in GOP circles that also includes an evaluation of temperament. In a last ditch attempt to show support, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev, brought the nominee in for a meeting Wednesday with a handful of Democratic senators and White House Counsel Bob Bauer. The media were invited in to take pictures, with Reid saying the nominee deserved to be confirmed. But it does not appear the White House has redoubled its effort at gaining centrist GOP support. Last year, Liu was taken to meet with a number of centrist GOP members, but nothing of the sort appears to have happened in this session of Congress.  Both Sens. Olympia Snowe and Susan Collins of Maine, who remain undecided, said no one in the administration has even contacted them about Liu recently. Sen. John Thune, a member of GOP leadership who normally votes to end the filibuster of a judicial nominee, told Fox Wednesday that he remains undecided; however, he did ask, rhetorically, "Doesn't this fit the 'extreme circumstances' definition?" An expert in the area of federal judicial selection, attorney Glenn Sugameli questioned both Thune and Isakson this time around. "Do Sens. Thune and Isakson think the Constitution has been amended recently to allow filibusters of judicial nominees?  A request for comment from the office of moderate Sen. Scott Brown, R-Mass., a potential "yes" vote, went unanswered.   It is also unclear how Sen. Lisa Murkowski, R-Alaska, might vote. Though Liu's backers tout his impressive educational credentials, a Yale Law School graduate and Rhodes Scholar, as proof of his intellectual prowess, it remains to be seen if that can convince the small pool of possible GOP supporters to save this nomination.

Scary vote in US Senate tomorrow - you need to call!

Tomorrow, Harry Reid plans to vote on a very scary judicial appointment! Gordon Liu is a favorite of NARAL (advertised all over their home page).  He is nominated for the U. S. Court of Appeals, 9th Circuit.  It is the most liberal in the country (California and neighborhood).  Folks who know say Liu would be the left-most member. We are very concerned because Lui advocates deferring to foreign law.  That would enshrine abortion in a way that it could not be outlawed - ever. Our concern is cloture.  If there is a vote, Liu will be confirmed, so we must have Sen. Brown vote against cloture! Maria Talks: Gov. Patrick Disrespects Parents and Tax-payers

Members of our organization and the general public are appalled by the content of the site. There is medical and psychological misinformation as well as serious infringements on the rights of parents and families.  The site practices deception and misleading omission when discussing the realities and risks of abortion and, literally, coaches minors on how to obtain abortions without telling their parents.  This is clearly in violation of the legislative intent of the Massachusetts Parental Consent Law. Murray       Health and Human Services Secretary JudyAnn Bigby, MD.       Department of Public Health Commissioner John Auerbach 4)     House bill 1540 will expand the message of the Maria Talks website with respect to abortion and sexuality.  This bill should not be passed until the following questions are answered:     As with Maria Talks, will these programs be telling minors how to get an abortion without telling their parents?   will these programs be giving them contact information and helping to provide a lawyer for the judicial bypass?   will these programs be helping minor girls to obtain abortifaceint drugs, also known as "emergency contraception"?   are these programs willing to risk potentially concealing statutory rape?   will these programs refer minor girls to PPLM, the largest abortion provider in the state?  (nearly 2/3 of all abortions in MA in 2009)   As with Maria Talks, will these programs be deceiving minors by omitting a description of prenatal development or showing an ultrasound?   will these programs be describing an abortion as merely emptying the contents of the womb?   will these programs describe the experience of an abortion as merely causing a little temporary discomfort? will these programs fail to identify the common physical consequences of an abortion hemorrhage, infection, damage to the cervix, etc.   will these programs de-emphasize adoption and other alternatives to abortion?   As with Maria Talks, will these programs mislead minors by telling them the failure rate for pregnancy prevention by condom use is 2%? (1 in 50)   will they fail to tell minors that the typical failure rate is 17% (1 in 6)?1   will these programs tell minors that these failure rates only reflect the failures at fertility (6/28 days per cycle), and that the actual failure rate in preventing STI's is even higher?   will these programs fail to tell young people that after nearly three decades of advocating "safer sex" practices in America, 26 % of teenage girls has an STI? 2    will they fail to tell minors that 48% of African American girls has an STI? 3   will these programs tell minor girls that in spite of nearly three decades of advocating condom use, MA has the 11th  highest rate of teen abortion in the nation? 4   will they fail to tell young men that a recent study has estimated that 50% of men in America over the age of 18 has HPV? 5   will these programs tell young people that Gardasil will not protect them against certain HPV strains that cause 30 % of  cervical cancers? 6   will these programs fail to tell young people that, according to the CDC, correct and consistent condom use may not fully protect them against HPV? 7   As with Maria Talks, will these programs ignore the results of a federally funded study that determined that "comprehensive sexuality education" was one of the least effective strategies for delaying the initiation of sexual activity among high risk students? 8   will these programs ignore the finding that "abstinence only" was the most effective strategy over a two year period? 9   will these programs ignore the rights and wishes of  the majority of parents who want their children to be taught to abstain throughout their high schools years? 10   will these programs sabotage the guidance of parents by providing young people with contraception and clandestine abortions? will these programs be entrusted to training and implementation by organizations such as PPLM who have the most to lose in terms of clients by effective abstinence education.   We also believe that all curricula that deal with sexuality issues and abortion,  that are funded by taxpayers, and utilized by public schools and state funded agencies, should be posted on the Dept. of Education and Dept. of Health and Human Services websites and otherwise be made available to the public for evaluation.  This also includes Health education and "Wellness" curricula that have sexual content embedded in discussions of a range of other health issues.  All material should be described in explicit language with respect to abortion, contraception and sexual behavior.
