Cheers to Cong. Lynch! Boos to...

We in Massachusetts have nine Congressmen who favor killing little girls because they are girls!  Unless you live in my district, your Congressman is one of them.  Stephen Lynch was one of the few Democrats who voted to ban sex-selection abortions.

The U.S. House of Representatives just voted to make it unlawful to perform or coerce a sex-selection abortion. The vote was 246-168 in favor of the bill - a strong majority, although short of the two-thirds vote required under the fast-track procedure utilized today

You will appreciate this statement by Doug Johnson, Legislative Director of National Right to Life Committee, "We commend the House Republican leadership for bringing this bill to the floor today under the fast-track procedure.  Today's groundbreaking majority vote was a stepping stone to this bill ultimately becoming law - perhaps after the replacement of some of the lawmakers who today were unwilling to protect victimized women and their unborn daughters from sex-selection abortions, because they were more concerned with maintaining favor with the abortion industry, pro-abortion advocacy groups, and Hollywood donors."

Let's all call or email Cong. Lynch to thank him, (202) 225-8273
.  If you email, https://lynch.house.gov/contact-me/email-me , be sure the subject contains the message - for instance "Thanks for vote on sex-selection ban" or "Thanks for vote on HR 3541".

We are still working on the same bill here in Massachusetts.  Thanks for all you do!

Help stop sex-selection abortions on Wednesday!

The U.S. House of Representatives will vote on Wednesday, May 30, on a bill to ban sex-selection abortions nationwide, at any point in pregnancy.

The legislation is a recently revised version of the Prenatal Nondiscrimination Act (PRENDA) (H.R. 3541). The House will consider the bill on the "Suspension Calendar," which means that a two-thirds vote will be required for passage.

Please call to tell your Congressman to go on record against this war on baby girls.

A poll released on May 16, 2012 by the Charlotte Lozier Institute.

finds that 77% of respondents feel sex-selection abortions should be illegal and only 16% think they should be legal. Among women, support for making sex-selection abortion illegal is 80%-13%. Among those 45 -55 years of age, it is 87%-11%.

Are sex-selection abortions occurring in Massachusetts? Absolutely! Helen Cross has been following developments here and will cover them in an upcoming MCFL News. They are more prevalent in Massachusetts than in many states.

The bill would make it an offense, punishable by up to five years imprisonment, to knowingly do any one of the following : (1) perform an abortion "knowing that such abortion is sought based on the sex or gender of the child"; (2) use "force or threat of force. . . for the purpose of coercing a sex-selection abortion"; (3) solicit or accept funds to perform a sex-selection abortion; or (4) transport a woman into the U.S. or across state lines for this purpose. However, "A woman upon whom a sex-selection abortion is performed may not be prosecuted or held civilly liable for any violation . . ."

CALL TODAY TO END THIS OUTRAGEOUS WAR AGAINT UNBORN WOMEN!

DEMAND A 'YES' vote on H.R. 3541. Thanks, Anne

Glendon: Why the Bishops are Suing the U. S. Government

Catholic institutions are suing to protect the rights of us all. As Gov. Huckabie is quoted, "We are all Catholic now".

A couple of plugs: We have an excellent presentation on the whole HHS Mandate situation by Prof. Mark Discher at the MCFL Convention on June 9th. http://www.masscitizensforlife.org/

Also, Prof. Glendon is the featured speaker at the MCFL banquet on Oct 19th. http://www.masscitizensforlife.org/

Mary Ann Glendon: Why the Bishops Are Suing the U.S. Government

The main goal of the contraception mandate is not to protect women's health. It is a move to conscript religious organizations into a political agenda.

By MARY ANN GLENDON, Wall Street Journal, May 22, 2012

This week Catholic bishops are heading to federal courts across the country to defend religious liberty. On Monday they filed 12 lawsuits on behalf of a diverse group of 43 Catholic entities that are challenging the Department of Health and Human Services' (HHS) sterilization, abortifacient and birth-control insurance mandate.

Like most Americans, the bishops have long taken for granted the religious freedom that has enabled this nation's diverse religions to flourish in relative harmony. But over the past year they have become increasingly concerned about the erosion of conscience protections for church-related individuals and institutions. Their top-rated program for assistance to human trafficking victims was denied funding for refusing to provide "the full range of reproductive services," including abortion. For a time, Catholic Relief Services faced a similar threat to its international relief programs. The bishops fear religious liberty is becoming a second-class right.

Along with leaders of other faiths who have conscientious objections to all or part of the mandate, they hoped to persuade the government to bring its regulations into line with the First Amendment, and with federal laws such as the Religious Freedom Restoration Act that provide exemptions to protect the conscience rights of religious institutions and individuals.

On Jan. 20, however, HHS announced it would not revise the mandate or expand its tight exemption, which covers only religious organizations that mainly hire and serve their co-religionists. Instead, the mandated coverage will continue to apply to hospitals, schools and social service providers run by groups whose religious beliefs require them to serve everyone in need.

Continued attempts to solve the problem by negotiation produced only an announcement by the Obama administration in February that insurance providers would pay for the contested services. Since many Catholic entities are self-insured and the others pay the premiums, the bishops' concerns were not alleviated.

The main goal of the mandate is not, as HHS claimed, to protect women's health. It is rather a move to conscript religious organizations into a political agenda, forcing them to facilitate and fund services that violate their beliefs, within their own institutions.

The media have implied all along that the dispute is mainly of concern to a Catholic minority with peculiar views about human sexuality. But religious leaders of all faiths have been quick to see that what is involved is a flagrant violation of religious freedom. That's why former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, a Baptist minister, declared, "We're all Catholics now."

More is at stake here than the mission of all churches, including the Catholic Church, to provide social services like health care and education to everyone regardless of creed, and to do so without compromising their beliefs. At the deepest level, we are witnessing an attack on the institutions of civil society that are essential to limited government and are important buffers between the citizen and the all-powerful state.

If religious providers of education, health care and social services are closed down or forced to become tools of administration policy, the government consolidates a monopoly over those essential services. As Cardinal Timothy Dolan, president of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, put it, we are witnessing an effort to reduce religion to a private activity. "Never before," he said, "have we faced this kind of challenge to our ability to engage in the public square as people of faith."

With this week's lawsuits, the bishops join a growing army of other plaintiffs around the country, Catholic and non-Catholic, who are asking the courts to repel an unprecedented governmental assault on the ability of religious persons and groups to practice their religion without being forced to violate their deepest moral convictions.

Religious freedom is subject to necessary limitations in the interests of public health and safety. The HHS regulations do not fall into that category. The world has gotten along fine without this mandate-the services in question are widely and cheaply available, and most employers will provide coverage for them.

But if the regulations are not reversed, they threaten to demote religious liberty from its prominent place among this country's most cherished freedoms. That is why Cardinal Dolan told CBS's "Face the Nation" on April 8: "We didn't ask for this fight, but we won't back away from it."

Ms. Glendon is professor at Harvard Law School.

A version of this article appeared May 22, 2012, on page A17 in the U.S. edition of The Wall Street Journal, with the headline: Why the Bishops Are Suing the U.S. Government.

Thank You for Fighting DPS! Funding Bouquet Extended!

Dear pro-life friends,
First I want to thank everyone who helped to make our pro-life Mother's Day Funding Bouquet such a great success.  Your gifts to defend life and honor motherhood will help us to keep our efforts both to stop legal Doctor-Prescribed Suicide and to identify, educate and activate pro-life people across the commonwealth running through the summer.  Thank you so much for all you do.
For those of you who couldn't find the time to participate or just plain forgot, I have good news.  Because of the great success of the Funding Bouquet, we've decided to extend to effort until noon tomorrow (5/15/2012). (CLICK HERE)
That means you still have a chance to contribute to funding the effort to educate the public about the danger posed by Doctor-Prescribed Suicide and there's still time to make your gift in memory of a departed mother (CLICK HERE to go directly to our donations page and make a gift).
Don't forget that Massachusetts will be voting on the so-called "Death with Dignity" Act on the ballot this November.
This proposed law would allow doctors to prescribed supposedly "terminal" patients with a lethal dose of poison.  The sick, infirm, elderly and helpless are all at risk.
Make no mistake, Doctor-Prescribed Suicide targets the vulnerable.  For example, despite the fact that severe, but treatable, depression is the most common cause of thoughts of suicide, there is no required screening for depression or mental illness included in the proposed law.  Depression screening in cases like this is a precaution so obvious that its omission seems almost intentional.
What are proponents expecting to happen?   What are they hoping will happen?
This terrible bill can be defeated but only if we work together.  That's why I need everyone who has yet to participate in the Mother's Day Funding Bouquet to CLICK HERE and do so now.  Your gift of $10, $20, $50 or whatever you can afford will go a long way toward beating the radical pro-death lobby in this critical fight.
People who are suffering with serious illness need compassion and real care, not poison pills.  Let's ensure that we stay a state which tries to treat the sick rather than sending them off to die.
Let's not forget that in the Northwest, where Doctor-Prescribed Suicide is legal, so-called "Death with Dignity" has been used as a means of containing healthcare costs.
Cancer patients in Oregon have been told that while the expensive medicines they need to extend their time with family and friends are not covered by their health plan, cheap suicide tablets would be paid for.  Do we really want to put such a cost-cutting tool into the hands of unknown bureaucrats?
We need to stand together to fight Doctor-Prescribed Suicide.  If you have yet to contribute to our Mother's Day Funding Bouquet please CLICK HERE to do so now and help prevent an attempt to turn our doctors in to accomplices of self-destruction.
Indeed, Doctor-Prescribed Suicide does fly in the face of all the finest traditions of Western Medicine.
For two and a half millennia, doctors have taken as their ethical guide promises to "do no harm," and to "never give deadly medicine, even when asked."  These standards have provided the foundation for a medical profession that looks to the patient's life and health as their first real concern.  Now, the radical death lobby wants to change all that.
Doctors don't want the change.  That's why the Massachusetts Medical Society and the American Medical Association have firmly rejected Doctor-Prescribed Suicide.  They recognize the danger of turning healers into killers.
If the proposed law passes, how could a sick and elderly person know that he can trust his doctor to do everything he can for him?  How could anyone?
The implications are terrifying.
That's why I'm asking everyone who has yet to contribute to the Mother's Day Funding Bouquet to please do so now.  We have had good success with this effort but your gift of $10, $20, $50 or whatever you can afford would make a real difference to our abilities as we conduct this campaign to defend Life.
Remember, even though it is too late for cards you can still make a gift in honor of a mother or in memory of a departed mother by including a note to that effect in the comments section of our donations page.
This fight is so important and the only way we can win is by working united.  I'm so glad we're standing strong for life together.
Keep on fighting!

Yours for Life,

Massachusetts Citizens for Life

PS—Thanks again to everyone who has already participated.  Your gift to the Mother's Day Funding Bouquet is making such a difference in this critical battle.  It is wonderful to think about everything you do for the cause of Life.
PPS—Remember, despite the work we're putting in to stopping Doctor-Prescribed Suicide, we can't afford to let up on our efforts to protect the unborn.  It would be terrible to have to make tough choices about which effort needed our resources more.  Please, if you plan on giving, be as generous as you can.  CLICK HERE to donate

Happy Mother's Day

Happy Mother's Day!  Especially to all you mothers, but really, to everyone.

I think it's safe to say that everyone involved in the pro-life struggle understands the importance of motherhood, so I won't go on at length.

I did want to share a poem which Christina Rossetti used as the dedication of her fourth volume of sonnets. I think it is just lovely--and very true.  In the end, how much of what we accomplish, how much of the good we do, is an attempt to live up to our mothers' expectations for us?  How much is an attempt to return in some measure the love they gave to us?

Sonnets are full of love, and this my tome
Has many sonnets: so here now shall be
One sonnet more, a love sonnet, from me
To her whose heart is my heart's quiet home,
To my first Love, my Mother, on whose knee
I learnt love-lore that is not troublesome;
Whose service is my special dignity,
And she my loadstar while I go and come
And so because you love me, and because
I love you, Mother, I have woven a wreath
Of rhymes wherewith to crown your honored name:
In you not fourscore years can dim the flame
Of love, whose blessed glow transcends the laws
Of time and change and mortal life and death.

Again, happy Mother's Day.  Let's keep trying to be the people our mother's knew we could be.  Let's keep fighting for Life.

-Anne

PS--Thanks to everyone who participated in our Mother's Day Funding Bouquet.

Thank You. Mother's Day Bouquet Doing Well. Don't Be Left Out!

Dear Friends,

I want to thank those of you who have contributed to MCFL's Mother's Day Funding Bouquet. Yesterday I revealed that we hadn't even made a dent in our funding goal. I asked you to please do what you could. I knew I could count on you (Didn't give yet? CLICK HERE).

Once again, you are proving me right.

Thanks to the contributions of so many of those who received my earlier emails we are now within striking distance of our goal! If you are among those who gave, you deserve to be congratulated on your generosity. Thank you for standing strong for life.

If you have yet to give, don't worry. It isn't too late to strike a blow for life and against Doctor-Prescribed Suicide by contributing $10, $20, $50 or whatever you can afford to MCFL's Mother's Day Funding Bouquet (CLICK HERE to contribute).

Don't forget, along with your contribution you can honor motherhood further by signing up to five (5) of the best mothers, or honorary mothers, you know up for a lovely pro-life Mother's Day e-card.

You can also make a gift in memory of a departed mother by simply including a note in the comments section of the donation form. (CLICK HERE to make a gift in memory of a mother)

The money raised in the Mother's Day Funding Bouquet will help keep our efforts to educate the public about the danger posed by Doctor-Prescribed Suicide running through the summer.

The radical pro-death activists, unsatisfied with the carnage they have wrought on the unborn, are now targeting the depressed, infirm and elderly with a law that will allow doctors to prescribed sick patients with a lethal dose of poison.

If the measure passes, the disabled, ill and otherwise "inconvenient" are all at risk.

People in pain or suffering from depression need compassion and treatment--not medical abandonment and a poison pill. By fighting this bill we are saving lives, maybe even the lives of elderly mothers.

Remember that in the Pacific Northwest, where Doctor-Prescribed Suicide is already legal, cancer patients have been denied life-extending drugs and offered offered suicide doses instead. Do we really want a tool like Doctor-Prescribed Suicide placed in the hands of cost-cutting bureaucrats?

Proponents may call the law "Death with Dignity." But where's the dignity in pressuring someone's elderly mother into killing herself?

I'm proud that so many of us have chosen to stand up for real dignity and honor motherhood by participating in our Mother's Day Funding Bouquet (Haven't given? CLICK HERE). Together we can win this critical fight.

What better way to honor a beloved pro-life mother who's gone on to her reward than giving a gift in her memory that will protect the lives of other mothers as well as unborn babies? CLICK HERE to make a gift in honor of a beloved mother.

This fight is so important. I'm glad we're in it together.

Thank you for all you do in support of Life!

Best wishes for a happy Mother's Day,

Anne Fox,
President,
Massachusetts Citizens for Life

PS-The money raised from the Mother's Day Funding Bouquet will ensure that our efforts both to stop Doctor-Prescribed Suicide and protect the unborn can continue. It also gives us a chance to honor departed mothers by making a gift in their memory by including a note in the comments section of the donations page. Your gift in honor of motherhood of $10, $20, $50 will protect the vulnerable from Doctor-Prescribed Suicide, including many elderly mothers (CLICK HERE).

PPS-Many have already given in support of this effort. If you've already contributed thank you. Your gift will make a difference for the better. Please forward this message to anyone who might be interested-we need to spread the word!

They want to KILL Mom! We need to raise $10,000 by Sunday

Pro-Life Friend,

Things are looking bleak.

When I emailed you on Wednesday, I explained that MCFL needed to raise $10,000 by Mother's Day to effectively continue the fight for life (CLICK HERE to donate). As of today, we've only raised a fraction of that amount with out Mother's Day Funding Bouquet. If you're unsure of what to do, please read the entire letter before deciding.

The extremely well-funded radical pro-death lobby has once again turned its attention toward Massachusetts. This time they seek to pass a Doctor-Prescribed Suicide law which would allow doctors to give a lethal dose of poison to sick, depressed, elderly and vulnerable patients (CLICK HERE to help stop them).

They are marking our grandparents, aunts, uncles, fathers and even our beloved mothers for death. We have to stop them but we need to raise funds to do it.

Please help raise the $10,000 we need by contributing to our Mother's Day Funding Bouquet (CLICK to donate). Your generous gift honoring motherhood of $10, $20, $50 or whatever you can afford will help us keep our effort to educate the voters about this dangerous proposal active through the summer.

Your Mother's Day gift could save the lives of elderly mothers and the children of expectant mothers.

Let's not forget that even as pro-death forces target the infirm and elderly, they are already assaulting Life and motherhood in another way-by slaughtering thousands of this commonwealth's unborn children each year through legal abortion.

The so-called "Death with Dignity" Act, which will be on the ballot in November, is yet another expansion of the death culture which has dominated this country since 1973. As always, like the bullies and cowards they truly are, the pro-death activists are focusing their attack on the most vulnerable.

(CLICK HERE to stand up to these bullies)

For example, the proposed law does not require mandatory depression screening-despite the fact that severe, but treatable, depression is the most common cause of suicidal ideation. The patients targeted by the law will have just received serious medical news: It is reasonable to assume they might be depressed as a result.

Talk of suicide is a cry for help and a compassionate society would offer help-not poison pills.

Sadly my friend, it gets worse.

WGBH and the Boston Globe recently featured the story of a Massachusetts family that "helped" an ailing parent obtain Doctor-Prescribed Suicide in Oregon where it is legal.

The man suffered from a tumor which impaired his brain function. The family and their doctors worked to get him healthy enough so he could kill himself.

The perversity of medical professionals healing a seriously ill, potentially confused man so that he can more easily commit suicide is astounding.

If the law passes, this could happen to anyone; to our friends, to our mothers, even to you and me one day.

That's why it is so important for you to support MCFL's Mother's Day Funding Bouquet. Your gift of $10, $20 or $50 will help make the difference in this fight. It's also a great chance to honor up to five (5) of the best mothers you know by signing them up for a pro-life Mother's Day e-card (CLICK HERE to make a gift).

You can also make a gift in honor of a mother who has passed away by including a note to that effect on the donation page (CLICK HERE).

Proponents of Doctor-Prescribed Suicide have the gall to portray inveigling an impaired person and his grieving family into ending his life as an act of compassion. We know better.

We know that encouraging people at their most vulnerable to kill themselves is as far from compassion as you can get.

The word compassion is drawn from the Latin meaning "suffer together" or "suffer with." Suffering people need caring, effective medical treatment--that's compassion. Offering a sick person poison pills is simply medical abandonment.

Taking care of vulnerable people can be taxing and "inconvenient".  Does that make their lives inconvenient?  People deserve proper care not self-imposed death sentences.

The arguments change but the reasons never do. The "rights" that pro-death advocates promote are the "right" to total autonomy and the "right" of the strong to prey upon the weak.

We can't afford to lose the battle to defend life. That is why I am asking you to dig deep and help us meet our $10,000 funding goal by this Mother's Day. Your gift of $10, $20, $50 or whatever you can afford will fund our critical educational efforts needed to defeat the pro-death initiatives. Please give. We MUST win but can only do it if we work together for Life.

It's hard to believe, but the radical pro-death activists behind the Doctor-Prescribed Suicide law actually claim that it would promote the dignity of those suffering from a so-called "terminal" illness.

I wonder. Where's the dignity in persuading an elderly patient into killing herself? Where's the dignity in denying a cancer patient life-saving drugs but offering suicide pills (as has been done in Oregon)?

Did you know that in Oregon and Washington where Doctor-Prescribed Suicide is legal, radical pro-death activists will throw "death parties" to celebrate individual medical suicides?

They pack a supposedly "terminal" patient's house with pro-suicide family, friends and even strangers. They serve refreshments and hand out favors. They claim it is to support the often confused patient in his final hours-but it is really to make sure he takes all of his "medicine."

What sort of people would do these things?

The law these people are proposing is wrong. It's just that simple. It's our job, yours and mine, to make sure the voters of Massachusetts are educated about the potential consequences of the Doctor-Prescribed Suicide law.

That's why I need you to CLICK HERE and participate in the MCFL Mother's Day Funding Bouquet. Let's honor our mothers by standing up for Life. After all, without our mothers who would be here?

Your generous contribution of $10, $20, $50 or whatever you can afford will allow our comprehensive efforts to educate the public to continue through at least the first part of the summer (CLICK to contribute). You will also have the opportunity to have a lovely pro-life e-card sent to up to 5 of the best moms you know or make a donation in honor of a departed mother. Your gift to honor motherhood may just save the life of someone's mother when we defeat Doctor-Prescribed Suicide in November. Remember, we need to raise $10,000 by Mother's Day.

My friend, things are looking bleak, for now. Together we can change that.

I know I can count on you!

Yours for Life,

Anne Fox

President,

Massachusetts Citizens for Life

PS-despite the importance of the Doctor-Prescribed Suicide issue, we can't let up for one minute on our efforts to protect the unborn. Funds are scarce and we don't want to have to make any tough choices between these necessary fights. CLICK HERE to make your contribution to the Mother's Day Funding Bouquet and please be as generous as you can.

Our mothers chose life. Let's help a generation of expectant mothers make the same choice.

PPS- Honor a special mother or many special mothers.  Donate to the Mother's Day Funding Bouquet.  You may sign up as many as five of the best mothers or honorary mothers you know. Best of all, this gift will save lives, including the lives of many elderly mothers.

You can also make a special gift in memory of a departed mother by including a note to that effect on the donations page.
